"A doctoral dissertation systematically demolishing common misconceptions of alleged magical, protective, and physical properties of gemstones....Despite its brevity this work is important because it is one of earliest to express dissatisfaction with mere, uncritical descriptions taken from previous writers and incorporated in more modern gemological treatises...Very rare."--Gemology, J. Sinkankas, entry no. 6284. Thesis--Leipzig (J.J. Spener, respondent), 1687.

This article is from BMC Surgery , volume 13 . Abstract Background: Demineralised bone matrix (DBM) has shown to be effective in enhancing posterior fusion of the spine. Several animal studies and clinical investigations in humans showed its successful remodelling. The use of allogenic matrix may decrease the need of autologous bone graft and therefore helps prevent corresponding donor site morbidity. Since DBM products are very expensive, the question arises, whether it is completely...

This article is from BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders , volume 14 . Abstract Background: Reproducible and suitable animal models are required for in vivo experiments to investigate new biodegradable and osteoinductive biomaterials for augmentation of bones at risk for osteoporotic fractures. Sheep have especially been used as a model for the human spine due to their size and similar bone metabolism. However, although sheep and human vertebral bodies have similar biomechanical characteristics, the...

This article is from BMC Veterinary Research , volume 8 . Abstract Background: Retraction, atrophy and fatty infiltration are signs subsequent to chronic rotator cuff tendon tears. They are associated with an increased pennation angle and a shortening of the muscle fibers in series. These deleterious changes of the muscular architecture are not reversible with current repair techniques and are the main factors for failed rotator cuff tendon repair. Whereas fast stretching of the retracted...

We report unusual magnetic behavior in iron oxide hollow nanospheres of 9.3 $nm$ in diameter. The large fraction of atoms existing at the inner and outer surfaces gives rise to a high magnetic disorder. The overall magnetic behavior can be explained considering the coexistence of a soft superparamagnetic phase and a hard phase corresponding to the highly frustrated cluster-glass like phase at the surface regions.

This article is from BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders , volume 13 . Abstract Background: In the present study, 4 different metallic implant materials, either partly coated or polished, were tested for their osseointegration and biocompatibility in a pelvic implantation model in sheep. Methods: Materials to be evaluated were: Cobalt-Chrome (CC), Cobalt-Chrome/Titanium coating (CCTC), Cobalt-Chrome/Zirconium/Titanium coating (CCZTC), Pure Titanium Standard (PTST), Steel, TAN Standard (TANST) and TAN...
